Perfect Galician Getaway Date of Stay: June 2009
Small hotels like this are hard to find; very clean and comfortable with just the amenities needed for a relaxing break - none of the excessive trappings of a 5* box. The hotel's location is part way along what is effectively a no-through road - so it's delightfully quiet 24/7. My room had a fabulous view overlooking the estuary out to sea. The hotel staff were lovely and as helpful as you could wish for. Children were warmly welcomed.
Food was good and fresh with a variety to satisfy any palate - and reasonably priced. Although typically Spanish - helpfully there's a menu printed in English. Breakfasts can be 'fuerte' (big and cooked) or light and fruity. Eating on the shaded terrace with the view across water and the occasional dolphin popping up to say hello - it doesn't get any better.
The beach areas just across from the hotel are well sheltered and very child-friendly. A beach bar sells refreshments and ice-creams - as does the hotel.
You need a car to get there; parking is not available at the hotel but there are some space nearby. There are a couple of other bars/restaurants and a pharmacy all in walking distance.
Walkers will enjoy the hills behind the hotel for some fabulous 'miradors' (views) across the surrounding countryside - it was empty whilst I was there. There are a number of cascading mountain streams you can follow and in which you can cool off! The local village of Combarro is fun and quirky with its narrow streets that meander down to the water's edge. And the rest of the Sanxenxo peninsular is easy to access.
Visiting in June - before the summer Spanish getaway in July August - was perfect. If you want to see Spain in a truer light then this Galician gem is not to be missed. It's not on the typical tourist trail, and thank goodness for that.

Los pequeños hoteles como este son dificiles de encontrar; muy limpio y confortable. Con las comodidades justas para un relajamiento total, sin la incomodidad de las escaleras que podemos encontrar en hoteles de 5 pisos.
El hotel se encuentra en una calle solo para residentes, de ahí su poco tráfico que lo hace muy tranquilo durante toda la semana. -. Mi habitación tenía unas fabulosas vistas desde donde contemplaba el estuario marino. El personal del hotel era servicial y encantador tanto como usted pudiera desear. Los niños fueron acogidos calurosamente.
Las comidas eran buenas y frescas, con una variedad para satisfacer a cualquier paladar y de precio razonable. Aunque lo típico sea encontrar el menú en español aquí también lo tienen en inglés. Los desayunos pueden ser ' fuertes' (grandes y cocinados) o ligeros y con frutas. Mientras consumes en la sombreada terraza con vistas al mar con suerte puedes disfrutar de la visita de los delfines que ocasionalmente se zambullen mientras te saludan. ¡Mejor imposible!.
Las playas a poca distancia de la terraza estan bien protegidas y son seguras para los niños. Un bar al lado del la playa vende refrescos y helados, al igual que en el hotel.
Necesitará un coche para llegar allí; el estacionamiento no está disponible en el hotel pero hay espacios cerca. Hay un par de otras bares/restaurantes y una farmacia a muy poca distancia.
Los caminantes gozarán de las colinas detrás del hotel con fabulosos “miradores”, los campos de los alrededores eran muy tranquilos cuando yo estube allí. ¡Hay riachuelos que terminan formando cascadas en la montaña, que usted puede seguir y en los cuales puede refrescarse! La aldea local de Combarro es divertida y peculiar con sus calles estrechas que serpentean al lado del mar. Y el resto de Sanxenxo tiene un facil acceso.
El visitarla en junio -antes de las vacaciones de verano españolas (julio y agosto) - es perfecto.
Si usted quiere conocer España en una luz más verdadera entonces esta joya gallega no debe faltarle.

Wonderful get away August 1st - 8th 2009
We had a wonderful week in Hotel Caracol. Paco and his staff were attentive and generous to a fault. Our large bedroom and ensuite were spotless. There is no A/C but as the room overlooked the sea across the road it was unnecessary. The road outside is a cul de sac and is very quiet.
The food - fantastic. Breakfast was very good; fresh fruit, cold meat and cheese, eggs with bacon, warm bread, and orange juice. We ate in every night, fresh fish especially shell fish were wonderful, but also hake, sardines and octopus. The chicken and steak were also good.
An afternoon coffee may be accompanied by pieces of cake courtesy of Paco. While Spanish and Gallego are the language of the house, Sally and John are very helpful, their local knowledge added greatly to our holiday.
You need a car the access the local city and lovely villages, the road are very good and driving is hassle free. Very relaxing, if you must have a disco this is not the scene for you.
If you enjoy walking, watching the dolphins while you sip your evening drink, fishing from the pier, people watching, relaxing on the beach, in a pleasant homely atmosphere and at very reasonable prices then this is for you.

Tuvimos una semana maravillosa en el hotel Caracol. Paco y su personal eran atentos y abundantes hasta la saciedad. Nuestro dormitorio era grande e impecable. No hay aire/acondicionado pero como el cuarto estaba al lado del mar era innecesario. El exterior del camino es un callejón sin salida y es muy reservado.
La comida - fantástica. El desayuno era muy bueno; fruta fresca, carne y queso frío, huevos con tocino, pan caliente, y zumo de naranja. Comimos allí cada noche, los crustáceos pescados frescos , eran maravillosos, pero también la merluza, sardinas y pulpo. El pollo y el filete estaban también muy buenos.
Un café de la tarde se puede acompañar por los pedazos de cortesía de la torta de Paco. Mientras que el español y el Gallego eran la lengua de la casa, Sally y John son muy atentos, su conocimiento local enriqueció enormemente nuestros días de vacaciones.
Usted necesitará un coche para el acceso a la ciudad local y a sus aldeas encantadoras, las carreteras son muy buenas y la conducción es fácil. Muy relajante, si usted desea una discoteca, éste no es un lugar para usted.
Si a usted le gusta caminar, mirar los delfínes mientras toma su bebida de la tarde, pescar desde el muelle, relajarse en la playa, en una atmósfera acogedora agradable y con precios muy razonables entonces esto es para usted.

Paco, a Legend. Date of Stay: July 2008
Hotel Caracol was our chosen destination for our 2008 summer holiday. Our 2 family party consisted of 4 adults and 3 children aged 12 to 14.
We chose to take three rooms, dumping the kids in one and one each for the parents. Our rooms had fantastic views overlooking the sea literally 15 yards from the beech. The rooms are spotless and comfortable and I would have no hesitation in recomending this hotel to anyone. After agreeing terms to use a friendly local's fishing boat for the fortnight, most days commenced with a couple of hours early morning mackerel fishing. Upon our triumphant return from the sea our catch was superbly prepared and served to the hungry mob.
That leads me to the breakfasts. Served daily by Paco and his darling wife on the terrace overlooking the beach. On most mornings our meal was interrupted by the magnificent sight of numerous dolphins playfully making their way up or down the Ria. what a superb sight and what a fantastic way to start the day. Our morning feasts consisted of enough bread, fruit, bacon, hams, local sausages, eggs etc etc to feed a small army. I promise you will never go hungry when Paco is around!
Days were spent either relaxing on the many splendid local beeches or discovering the wonderful surrounding areas such as Pontevedra, Sanxenxo and Combarro.The Cave Bar (not it's real name, but you get the idea) in Comabarro is a delight and must be used regulally! Expect to be treated to some of the finest tapas known to man. Meats, cheese, octopus, squid etc are all given freely and at lenghth. After a long day on the beech and an evening in one of the plethora of nearby bars and restaurants we would retire back to the Caracol. We soon discovered that to attempt an early night was pointless. Paco, owner, barman, waiter and all round legend and entertainer will have none of it! Like so many of the locals his generosity knows no bounds, and after a few days you will become accustomed to the plates of superb food, bottles of beer and wine that miraculously and mysterously appear.
The man just doesn't sleep. He is the life and soul at 2.00am and serving breaksfast at 8.00am! The level of customer service has to be experienced to believe. Nothing, and I mean nothing is too much trouble.
To sum up, Hotel Caracol is a little gem. An ideal base for any type of holiday, whether relaxing on the beech or discovering Galicia; Caracol would be hard to beat.

El hotel Caracol fue el destino elegido para nuestras vacaciones de verano 2008. Éramos dos familias formadas por cuatro adultos y 3 niños entre 12 y 14 años.
Cogimos tres habitaciones, descargando a los niños en una y una por cada pareja. Nuestras habitaciones tenían unas vistas fantásticas sobre el mar, a literalmente 14 metros de la playa. Las habitaciones son impecables y cómodas y no tendría ninguna duda en recomendar este hotel a cualquier persona. Después de acordar términos para alquilar una pequeña enbarcacion de un vecino local, la mayoria de los dias empezaban con unas horas de pesca.
Esto me lleva al desayuno, servido diariamente por Paco y su mujer encantadora en la terraza observando el mar. La mayoria de nuestras comidas estaban interrumpidas por la vista de numerosos delfines haciendo su trayectoria hacia arriba y abajo de la ria una magnífica manera de comenzar el día. Nuestros banquetes de las mañanas consistian en bastante pan, fruta, tocino, jamon, salchichas locales, huevos etc etc para alimentar a un pequeño ejército. ¡Le prometo que nunca tendrá hambre cuando Paco está alrededor!
Los días eran relajantes en las muchas playas locales espléndidas o descubriendo los alrededores maravillosos tales como Pontevedra, Sanxenxo y Combarro. La cueva (no es el nombre real del local pero se hará una idea) en Combarro es un placer y no debe dejar de conocerlo! Espere a probar algunas algunas de las tapas mas sabrosas que he conocido. Las carnes, el queso, el pulpo, el calamar etc todo se dan gratuitamente. Después de un largo día en la playa y de una tarde en uno de los pletóricos bares y restaurantes próximos nos retiravamos de nuevo al Caracol. Pronto descubrimos que acostarse temprano una noche, era algo imposible. ¡Paco, el barman, el camarero, y todo el personal son tan divertidos que es un placer estar allí! Como en algunos otros locales su generosidad no tiene límite, y después de algunos días usted ,estará acostumbrado a las magníficas comidas, a las botellas de cerveza y al vino que milagrosamente y misteiosamente aparece.
El hombre apenas duerme. ¡Él es la vida y el alma alas 2.00 de la mañana y el desayuno alas 8! El nivel de servicio y de atención al cliente tiene que ser experimentado para creerse. Nada, tiene demasiado apuro. Para resumir, el hotel Caracol es una pequeña joya. Una base ideal para cualquie tipo de día de fiesta, si se relaja en la playa o descubrir Galicia; Caracol sería duro de batir.

Watching Dolphins During Breakfast Date of Stay: July 2008
The hotel is a delight - off the beaten track but close enough to shops, beaches, restaurants etc. to ensure you don't feel too isolated. Large, clean rooms with, if you're lucky, magnificent sea views - literally the beach is across the road. The owner, Paco, is an excellent host, but be warned, he doesn't speak a word of English. The hotel and area in general are not populated by many English speakers, so a good phrase book comes in handy. We really did see Dolphins cruising across the bay on several occasions - both from our hotel window and when having breakfast on the terrace - an amazing experience.
This area has the advantage of having both costal and inland attractions - Pontevedra and VIgo are both worth a visit and only short drives from the hotel. Santiago de Compostela is a little further both well worth the effort.
The beaches in the area are beautiful - similar to Cornwall but usually with better weather! We did however have a couple of days of rain and it was chilly in the evenings so go prepared.
All in all it was an excellent holiday -we have no hesitation in recommending both the hotel and the area and would certainly like to go back there ourselves in the future.

El hotel es un placer. No es de los más centricos, pero bastante cercano a las tiendas, a las playas, a los restaurantes etc. Para que no conozca la sensación de sentirse aislado.Habitaciones grandes y limpias , si tiene suerte, magníficas vistas al mar - la playa está literalmente al otro lado del camino. El dueño, Paco, es un anfitrión excelente, pero se advierte: él no habla una palabra de inglés. El hotel y el área en general no son poblados por muchas personas de habla inglesa, así que un buen libro de frases viene muy bién. Vimos realmente delfínes cruzar la bahía en varias ocasiones – ambos desde nuestra ventana y al desayunar desde la terraza del hotel - ¡una experiencia asombrosa.! Esta zona tiene la ventaja de tener atracciones costeras e interiores - Pontevedra y Vigo son dignos de una visita y no quedan muy lejos del hotel. Santiago de Compostela es un poco más lejos, pero digno de un esfuerzo. ¡Las playas en la zona son hermosas - similar a Cornualles pero generalmente con mejor tiempo! Sin embargo tuvimos un par de días de lluvia y frío por las tardes, así que vaya preparado. Considerándolo todo fueron unas excelentes vacaciones - no tenemos ninguna duda en la recomendación del hotel y de la zona. Y quisiéramos volver allí nosotros mismos en un futuro.

We really did see Dolphins cruising across the bay on several occasions - both from our hotel window and when having breakfast on the terrace - an amazing experience.
This area has the advantage of having both costal and inland attractions - Pontevedra and VIgo are both worth a visit and only short drives from the hotel. Santiago de Compostela is a little further both well worth the effort.
The beaches in the area are beautiful - similar to Cornwall but usually with better weather! We did however have a couple of days of rain and it was chilly in the evenings so go prepared.
All in all it was an excellent holiday -we have no hesitation in recommending both the hotel and the area and would certainly like to go back there ourselves in the future.

El hotel es un placer. No es de los más centricos, pero bastante cercano a las tiendas, a las playas, a los restaurantes etc. Para que no conozca la sensación de sentirse aislado.Habitaciones grandes y limpias , si tiene suerte, magníficas vistas al mar - la playa está literalmente al otro lado del camino. El dueño, Paco, es un anfitrión excelente, pero se advierte: él no habla una palabra de inglés. El hotel y el área en general no son poblados por muchas personas de habla inglesa, así que un buen libro de frases viene muy bién. Vimos realmente delfínes cruzar la bahía en varias ocasiones – ambos desde nuestra ventana y al desayunar desde la terraza del hotel - ¡una experiencia asombrosa.! Esta zona tiene la ventaja de tener atracciones costeras e interiores - Pontevedra y Vigo son dignos de una visita y no quedan muy lejos del hotel. Santiago de Compostela es un poco más lejos, pero digno de un esfuerzo. ¡Las playas en la zona son hermosas - similar a Cornualles pero generalmente con mejor tiempo! Sin embargo tuvimos un par de días de lluvia y frío por las tardes, así que vaya preparado. Considerándolo todo fueron unas excelentes vacaciones - no tenemos ninguna duda en la recomendación del hotel y de la zona. Y quisiéramos volver allí nosotros mismos en un futuro.
